Hotel Review: Grand Hotel Oslo

Norway was not particularly high on my list of places to visit when I first planned my big trip around Europe. However, I will admit after watching Vikings (hello I am history nerd!) I instantly wanted to visit. With massive fjords, amazing landscape and so much history I knew I had to go!

When I was looking into my accommodations, I knew I wanted something in the City Centre to make exploring Oslo easier. The Grand Hotel Oslo is easily one of the most prestigious and best-known hotels. They first opened in 1874 more than 145 years ago and outrank the competition in service and quality.  Keep reading for my full experience at The Grand Oslo Hotel.

Grand Hotel Olso is located in the City Centre making it an ideal spot for exploring Oslo. You can quickly get to the hotel by taking the Flytoget Airport Express train which drops you off in the City Centre. It’s about a 20 minute ride and it runs every 10 to 20 minutes making it fast and convenient. From there you can walk or take a short cab depending on time of day. I opted for a cab ride due to luggage and it was inexpensive and quick.

While staying at the Grand Hotel Oslo you are within walking distance of The Royal Palace, shopping and great dining. Right next door you have a view of the Norwegian parliament. You can also get to the Nobel Peace Center which is where they hold the Noble Peace Prize ceremony every year!

If you want to get out and explore the Fjords you can head down to the harbor and take a multitude of different day trip tours. All in all, staying here ensures you are right in the middle of everything you could want to explore while in Oslo.

Not only is this hotel over 145 years old but it has an amazing rich history. It hosts the annual Nobel Peace Prize Banquet. The winner is also given a room in what is known as the Nobel Suite. The Grand Hotel Oslo has been in the city before its name was even Oslo, back when it was known as Kristiania. It hosts historic ballrooms some of the most famous in Oslo. Its hosted world diplomats, politicians, writers and so many more.

It hosts over 292 rooms, some with their own balconies that outlook onto Karl Johans and Rosenkrantz street. The hotel has gone through multiple renovations but still retains its old-world charm, solidifying it as a five-star accommodation.

The Grand Hotel Oslo host a banquet hall, two bars, a café and restaurant. The Banquet hall called Rococo can be used for larger events with up to 224 people. Inside they have a bar called Othilia which is a great spot for a drink before dinner. It was named after Othilia Lasson Engelhard who went to the Grand Café even though it was only for men at the time! Even if you aren’t staying at the hotel it’s a great place for a cocktail and piece of history.

Next to Othilia’s is Palmen which features Afternoon Tea, lunch and dinner. I had the pleasure of having lunch in the dining room and it was sublime! I had a white pasta with crab meat and broccolini.  I indulged mid-day with a glass of Rose, and it was well worth it. I finished off my meal with an expresso and a raspberry meringue dessert. I would highly recommend dining at Palmen during your stay or if you are staying in Oslo.

Breakfast is served at the Grand Café and its buffet style.  I say buffet lightly because the amount of food is insane! They have a full cheese and honey station with actual honeycomb! Hot stations, tons of meat options, fruit for those like me who don’t eat meat, bread (the lifeblood) and cereal. You will not go hungry at this buffet there is something for all diets. The café is also open during lunch and dinner and it is less expensive than Palmen. A note about the Grand Café is they do run a cashless dining room, meaning they try to take card only. They will except cash but it’s worth noting when you visit.

After hours they do have a rooftop bar called Eight Rooftop Bar. It has an amazing view of the city and serves light snacks. It is closed on Sundays and Mondays and opens after 4:00pm.

Each room is exquisitely decorated with unique touches throughout. They have junior suites, deluxe rooms, superior rooms, grand petite and grand suites. During my stay I stayed in a junior suite with a balcony overlooking the city. The room boosted huge bathrooms, an oversized bed with both a sitting area and separate desk space. The suite was decorated with gorgeous artwork and tapestry. It feels like you have stepped back in time to the old days of grandeur.

Onsite is a full spa that offers facials, massages and other body treatments. With a cave like pool that is heated it’s the epitome of RELAXATION. You can book your treatments online before your stay.

The Grand Hotel Oslo checks off all of my requirements for a luxurious and unique accommodation. It has such a rich history, is very central, great dining options and the service was amazing! The high price tag is 100% worth it for the quality of stay you will have.
