Musée Océanographique de Monaco

I love the South of France, it’s such a magical place! Not only for the beaches and shopping but the art and history.  One of the must do activities is to take a day trip to the country of Monaco. My personal favorite activity is visiting the Musée Océanographique de Monaco. It was built in 1910 by Prince Albert and it went through significant renovations in 2010.

This place is truly a work of art as its built on a cliff! The cliff is known as the mythical Rock of Monaco and it is said the Museum watches over the ocean. It’s world renowned and houses over 6,000 specimens of sea life!

If you can, make sure to purchase your tickets in advance as the line can get VERY long. I have visited two times and the first time I purchased in advance and that was the much better option. The museum has over six levels which range from an aquarium to the traditional museum.

Start at the bottom and make your way up. The aquariums house so many different types of sea life, my favorite was the shark tank!

Once you move upstairs, you’ll see the collection of fossils and skeletons they have and it’s amazing! It’s like a Belle and Ariel decorated a house together. You know what I mean, a huge library like collection and then all Ariel’s sea friends. Seriously, I hummed

“Look at this stuff

Isn’t it neat?

Wouldn’t you think my collection’s complete?

Wouldn’t you think I’m the girl

The girl who has everything.

Look at this trove

Treasures untold

How many wonders can one cavern hold?”

Anyways, as I was saying this place is really something to behold. They have skeletons of huge whales along with the history of whaling. It’s really interesting to hear the history behind the industry and to see how massive those animals are.

A fun tip is they have an interactive photo on the 4th floor where you can captain a ship. It’s a fun little free souvenir to take home! After you finish inside the museum head up to the top floor to see an amazing view of the sea and Monaco.

If you find yourself in Monaco, make sure you visit the Musée Océanographique its trés bon! If you’re looking for other things to do in a day check out my post here!
