Giant’s Causeway

Giant’s Causeway is over 40,000 basalt columns that all are interlocking. Its seriously one of the coolest things to see in Northern Ireland. If you are wanting to visit this amazing destination here are some tips to make it a successful trip!

The best place to day trip to the Giant’s Causeway is from Belfast. Located only an hour and a half drive this is a great place to start! If you want to have uninterrupted time, then the best option is to drive. You can rent a car through Enterprise they have extremely affordable rates. The route is direct and it’s very easy to follow, just make sure to use maps and have your portable wifi.

First thing is that when you get there you will have to take a LONG walk! When you get to the visitor center you will walk a mile downhill. Going down isn’t too bad but going uphill can be tiring. They do offer a bus ride to the bottom of the hill for £1 each way. I would wear shoes with a grip because if you plan to climb on the rocks, it can be very slippery. Also layers, always layers when in Ireland! This way if rain comes you are good to go!

Try to plan to come here early to avoid crowds. This is a popular tour spot so if crowds bother you first thing in the morning or around sunset is a great time.

Now most people come to the Causeway to take a picture and go but you should really spend your time exploring. I would plan for a couple of hours here to really enjoy and take it all in. They have a trail map that shows you the hiking options. This was really cool because you can get away from the crowd and explore more.

It’s really an amazing thing to see in person. These columns were formed from volcanic fissure that erupted and then cooled over time. Being on the sea it was eroded and shaped into what you see today.

If you want to see the Giant Causeway but don’t want to make a separate drive then a tour is a great option. That’s how I was able to see them, and I took a Game of Thrones tour and LOVED it! It was a great option for me because I was able to spend a couple of hours here but also go on and see other things.

However, if you decide to visit the Giant Causeways whether by tour or on your own, what’s most important is that you go! It’s a must do while in Northern Ireland and something I really recommend.
